Will underfloor heating suit your extension?

Updated 19 September 2026 · Project preparation

Discuss your project

Assess underfloor heating together with the floor build-up, heating needs and existing installation. Available depth and the chosen finish influence the options. A newly heated floor area cannot automatically be treated as a simple extension of every existing system.

What do the room and existing heating system require?

Describe how the extension will be used and which rooms connect to it. Collect information about the present heating equipment and controls. A larger open space may have different characteristics from a separate room. Ask the installer which information is needed for the proposal.

Floor area alone does not establish appropriate heat output. Insulation, glazing and intended use also matter. Mention possible future changes to the heat source so the chosen approach does not depend on assumptions that have never been discussed or recorded.

How does underfloor heating fit the complete floor build-up?

Different systems occupy different depths and impose different substrate requirements. Establish the proposed build-up and how it relates to finished floor level. Include pipework, distribution and necessary components in the drawings. A system description without screed and final covering is incomplete.

Have the supplier and installer confirm compatibility with the chosen finish. This reduces the risk of a late flooring decision changing levels or installation after other components have already been fixed. Product information should identify the actual proposed combination rather than a generic example.

How will you control heating in everyday use?

Consider how the extension is controlled relative to the original house. The location and accessibility of control components are practical design decisions, not details to leave until completion. Ask how operation will be explained and which settings matter.

A different heat delivery system may behave differently from familiar radiators. Do not substitute general promises about warm-up speed or savings for assessment. The useful discussion concerns the actual installation, the property and how the room is occupied, including whether connected spaces are used on different schedules.

Which records belong with installation and handover?

The quotation should identify supplied components and alterations to existing connections. Discuss commissioning checks and responsibility for coordination with the floor finish. Retain product information, relevant drawings and records of installed routes. These matter if future work involves the floor.

Request operating and maintenance guidance for the chosen arrangement. This keeps the installation understandable after pipes and junctions disappear behind the finished surface. Clarify what is supplied by the heating installer and what remains with the flooring contractor so neither party assumes the other has checked the interface.

Frequently asked questions

Can underfloor heating always be fitted to the existing floor?

That depends on the floor construction, available depth and proposed method. Have the existing condition assessed. A system that works in another property is not automatically appropriate for your floor.

Can every floor finish be used above it?

Compatibility should be checked for the particular product and heating arrangement. Request the relevant supplier requirements and coordinate the complete assembly before placing a final order for the covering.

Does underfloor heating guarantee lower bills?

That cannot be established from the system name alone. Occupation, insulation, heat source and controls all matter. Assess the actual property and compare supported assumptions instead of relying on a general savings claim.
