Compare insulation as a complete building assembly rather than an isolated product. Walls, roof, floor and junctions must work together. Ask which performance relates to the whole component and how ventilation and moisture control are incorporated into the proposal.
Which building elements will be insulated?
Separate the new floor, walls and roof. Each has its own assembly and connection to the existing house. A material suitable for one application is not automatically appropriate elsewhere. Ask about the role of every layer and the space occupied by the complete build-up.
Intended internal dimensions may therefore differ from external measurements. Include existing junctions so a new insulated surface does not terminate at an unexamined section of old wall or an undefined floor edge. Mark the boundary of the proposed work clearly on the drawing.
At which level should insulation performance be compared?
A value describing insulation material does not automatically state the performance of the complete building component. Establish whether a quoted figure applies to a product or an assembled construction. Compare alternatives using the same assumptions. Finishes, fixings and interruptions may be relevant to the assessment.
Selecting the greatest thickness alone is not a complete decision. Available space, moisture behaviour, installation and connections also matter. Retain the chosen specification with a drawing identifying its location, so subsequent product substitutions can be checked against the intended application.
How are transitions between elements developed?
Connections between floor, wall, roof and frame need their own details. These are locations where the insulation line may be interrupted. Discuss how thermal bridges are addressed and how airtightness connects with retained elements. A window with good product information does not independently resolve a weak frame perimeter.
Ask what is checked before joints or layers disappear behind finishes. Record important details with identifiable photographs. This preserves the completed arrangement for later renovation or repair rather than leaving future contractors to infer hidden construction from the visible surfaces.
How do use and indoor conditions fit the insulation plan?

An offer containing only an insulation product and a savings claim does not explain that coordination. Have the proposed solution assessed against your design, the existing house and the intended use. Ask which measurements or other information are still missing before performance for the completed extension can be supported by the project specification.
