The junction between extension and house must coordinate structure, heat, moisture and finishes. Develop it through details and sections. A continuous floor or matching brickwork can create visual unity without resolving the technical connection between old and new construction.
What existing construction is actually present?
Earlier alterations may have left different materials and concealed junctions in the rear elevation. Gather records and inspect critical areas before selecting a new detail. Record floor levels, roof edges, wall components and services passing through the connection zone.
A detail from another project can help a conversation but cannot simply be adopted without assessment. Show which existing elements remain, are opened or are altered. Drawing only the new extension leaves the most important interface outside the proposal and encourages assumptions about parts nobody has examined.
How are movement and support assessed?
Existing and new components may move differently. Ask how the proposal accommodates that behaviour and where separation or connection is intentionally provided. A movement joint, dilatatie in Dutch, involves more than the visible line: its arrangement must suit the components involved.
Coordinate structural decisions with finishes. A visually continuous floor may need different detailing from two distinct floor coverings. Raise those preferences early so the desired appearance does not conflict with a technical arrangement already fixed by another part of the project.
How are insulation and airtightness continued?
The connection at the wall, floor and roof may perform differently from the insulated areas beside it. Discuss how insulation and airtight layers continue through the detail, and include moisture behaviour in the assessment. A bead of sealant on the visible surface does not establish that the concealed assembly is appropriate.
Ask which checks can be made before components are closed. Photographs can record completed details if their location and construction stage are clear. Keep them with the relevant drawing rather than as unidentified images in a message thread.
Who handles the junction between work packages?
Several parties may contribute to the same junction: structural designer, builder, frame supplier and finishing contractor. Agree who coordinates the combined detail and who supplies information. Identify responsibility for reinstating existing surfaces and completing material transitions.
An unnamed boundary can allow each party to finish its own component while the connection between them remains unresolved. Review important junctions jointly before construction. This puts the intended appearance and technical responsibility into the same agreement, making it easier to recognise missing information while there is still time to resolve it.
