Underfloor heating

Updated 19 September 2026 · Project preparation

Underfloor heating uses the floor as part of the heat-emitting surface serving a room. Systems and connections differ. Suitability depends on heating demand, floor assembly, finish and the existing or proposed heating installation.

How this term relates to your project

An extension requires assessment of the new space alongside the rest of the home. Discuss controls and the components needed within the floor build-up. Available depth may influence the choice. Have flooring supplier and installer assess the proposed combination together.

A particular finish or existing system is not automatically appropriate because underfloor heating worked elsewhere. Retain information about concealed routes, product selections and commissioning. Define the boundaries between installation, screed and final covering so questions about preparation do not fall between contracts. The finished floor can conceal important components, making the handover records useful for later repairs or alterations.

Frequently asked questions

Can it be fitted to every existing floor?

That requires assessment of the particular floor, available height and installation.

Should the final covering be selected early?

Yes. Its compatibility affects technical development and needs timely coordination.
