Which equipment and usage locations should be mapped?
Prepare a room-by-room list of fixed appliances and everyday equipment. A kitchen needs different connections from a study or utility room. Identify appliances not yet selected so their specifications remain an explicit open item. Do not position sockets separately from furniture.
A connection behind fixed cabinetry serves a different purpose from an accessible outlet for a lamp. Include outdoor equipment if the extension changes access to the garden. The aim is a clear user brief for the installer, not a self-produced technical wiring design.
How will the existing installation be assessed?
Additional use may affect the existing electrical arrangement. Ask the installer which information is required about the distribution board, connected equipment and cable routes. Do not infer capacity from apparently unused spaces in a cupboard alone. Existing documents can help, but actual conditions need checking.
Electrical installation work should not be improvised from general website instructions. Request a clear description of proposed alterations and the checks associated with the completed work. Keep unresolved questions visible rather than treating the current installation as suitable because it has previously operated without an obvious problem.
How do lighting, controls and finishes fit together?
Discuss where people enter, sit and work, and the positions from which lighting should be operated. Different lighting functions do not necessarily need the same locations or controls. Coordinate wall and ceiling provisions with structure, ventilation and other services. A selected fitting may have particular installation or connection requirements.
Share that information before surfaces are closed. Record agreed positions on one current drawing. This reduces the chance of an obsolete kitchen plan or an informal sketch continuing to direct installation after the design has changed.
Which records help with later maintenance?
Ask which records and explanations accompany the completed work. Relevant circuit identification and photographs of concealed routes can support later changes. Retain equipment details where connection or operation has particular requirements. At handover, check that agreed outlets are accessible and occupants understand the controls.
Have technical observations assessed by the installer. A visibly working lamp is not a complete verification of the altered installation. The agreement should identify who performs that technical assessment and what information is recorded for the owner’s project file.
