Roof lantern or glazed roof strip

Updated 19 September 2026 · Project preparation

The Dutch term lichtstraat describes an elongated or assembled glazed roof opening. It can refer to different product forms, including lantern-like arrangements. Ask for the exact configuration, dimensions and glazing divisions rather than relying on the category name.

How this term relates to your project

Length and position should suit the room below. Glazing near the garden elevation does not automatically brighten the darkest part of the original house. Review its location in plan and section and discuss shading and cleaning. Coordinate the opening with roof structure and drainage.

Establish whether quoted sizes are external, internal or clear-opening measurements. Identify any opening sections and their controls. Compare the arrangement with other rooflights by the intended light distribution and complete installation, not simply the amount of glass in an offer. Supporting details and the surrounding finish belong in the same discussion.

Frequently asked questions

Does lichtstraat identify one standard product?

No. It is used for different configurations; drawings and product specifications make comparison clearer.

Is more roof glazing always preferable?

No. Position, sunlight, privacy and maintenance need to be considered together.
